Incredible Hulk #247
By Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema
Published May 1980
Hulk stops shrinking and is back on Jarella’s home planet, but things are different. Instead of being lush and green, it is a barren wasteland. He hears Jarella’s people screaming and rushes to save them from a flying bat-dragon. They try to speak to him, but he leaps away and returns with Jarella’s body.
The wizards of Jarella’s tribe cast a spell so Hulk can understand them and vice versa. They recap the last time Hulk visited—I’m not sure if this is a calling card of Bill Mantlo’s writing or of the convoluted continuity of Marvel in the late 70’s and early 80’s—ending with Hulk smashing the microscope slide with the tissue sample that contained Jarella’s world. As a result of that smashing, Jarella’s planet was knocked out of orbit and was jostled around, creating chaos. Nothing will grow anymore except in the Sacred Valley of Life, which is where they take dead bodies.
Hulk takes Jarella’s body into the valley but the rest of her people refuse to follow, saying it is too dangerous. Hulk starts to bury Jarella, but is attacked by creatures of the valley, who are following the command of a man who calls himself the Gardener.
Elsewhere, Doc Samson takes the catatonic General Ross hunting, and Betty returns to Gamma Base with Fred the Hippie and Rick Jones to yell at Talbot for dooming the Hulk.
